About FSSA

The Fire Suppression Systems Association (FSSA) is a not-for-profit trade association, drawing members domestic and internationally and is comprised of a blend of designer/installers, manufacturers, consultants, academics, and suppliers working together to share ideas and strategies for the benefit of the fire suppression systems industry. FSSA members are dedicated to the highest level of safety, reliability and effectiveness of special hazards fire suppression.

Our Mission . . .

FSSA is dedicated to promoting use of, and being the recognized leader on, special hazard fire protection systems; employing existing and new technologies to safeguard people, high-value assets and the environment.  As a global reaching organization, we provide our members with support and guidance with many questions or issues that arise, with a strong united voice.

History . . .
  • The FSSA was founded in 1982
  •  Incorporated in Illinois as a not-for-profit organization and exempt from Federal Income Tax as a Trade Association with 501(C)(6) designation
  • The first organizational meeting was held in San Diego, California
  • Robert Yellin was elected the first FSSA President; Larry Christensen, Vice President; George Krabbe,  Secretary/Treasurer
  • Since the beginning and continuing today, there has always been a balance between installing and manufacturing members
  • The first FSSA Technical Committee meeting was held in 1983 in Chicago, Illinois with Richard Koehler serving as Chair
  • The FSSA's first and only Legal Counsel is George Keeley
  • The Engineering Credentials Committee was established in 1983 with Burton Ford serving as the Chair; this committee began working with the NSPE to develop the NICET Certification Program for technicians in the fire suppression arena
  • In 1982, the FSSA held a liaison meeting with NFPA in Boston, Massachusetts; began cooperating and engaging with NFPA Standards Council
  • The FSSA's Education Committee was established in 1985 where Jim Boyer served Chair.  The committee developed the first Training Validation Program
  • Also in 1985, the FSSA began communications with UL, FM and NIST
