Firefighters stopped operations at 8:30 a.m. on July 10 on the International Paper Company.

Fire crews from 6 Cedar Rapids stations and 6 area departments spent all day containing a fire in a warehouse at International Paper, 4600 C Street SW, on Saturday, July 8, 2017.

Firefighters worked for over two days with International Paper employees to remove and extinguish the bales of recycled cardboard.

Many of the bales held fires that were deeply seated which made the bales be removed from the warehouse with skid loaders, excavators, and forklifts. The bales needed to be disassembled and then have the cardboard extinguished.

During the fire operations, the Cedar Rapids Fire Department was assisted by fire departments from Ely, Fairfax, Hiawatha, Marion, Mount Vernon, and Swisher. Area Ambulance Service also helped throughout the fire.

Cedar Rapids fire crews are still on scene at an International Paper Company warehouse fire more than a day after flames originally broke out at the facility, located on 4600 C Street SW.

"We are now in the 25th hour of the incident," the department posted to Facebook, Sunday. "In addition to the paper mill fire CRFD firefighters have responded to 30 others calls for service during the same time period including medical calls, cooking fires, car accidents, and smoke scares."

To help cover the demand for service calls, the department said it had to bring in a large contingent of off-duty CRFD employees.

"Personnel dropped their plans on short notice to assist at the fire and provide relief to the on-duty crews who were working at the fire displaying the selfless sacrifice that is common among city employees," said the post.

The fire call at International Paper went out at about 8 a.m. Saturday. To contain the large flames, Cedar Rapids had all six of the department's engines at the fire. Crews from Mount Vernon, Fairfax, Marion, Ely, Hiawatha, and Swisher fire departments assisted.

Firefighters said paper and cardboard continued to burn in a warehouse at the plant. They expected crews would be there all night, working to move the material out of the building.

Firefighters said the flames were under control Saturday evening. The department didn't believe there was a threat to the rest of the plant or to the surrounding area.

"Thanks to our neighbors from Ely, Fairfax, Hiawatha, Marion, Mount Vernon, and Swisher fire departments," read the Sunday post. "Each of these agencies sent personnel and equipment to assist at the fire."
