FSSA Annunciator Quarterly Issue: Spring 2017

President's Message

President, FSSA

The FSSA 2017 Annual Forum was monumental and commemorative in many ways.  This year, FSSA celebrated its 35th anniversary, honored Roger and Carolyn Bourgeois for perfect attendance at FSSA Annual Forums, logged record attendance, and had its First Annual Whiffle Ball World Series game.

In recognition of its 35th anniversary, Coral was chosen as the celebration emblem.  This was quite appropriate for our 35th anniversary given the correlation between coral reefs and FSSA.  Coral reefs start small and grow larger because of groups added overtime.

A Look Back at the FSSA 35th Annual Forum

The FSSA recently held its 35th Annual Forum in Naples, FL.  With record-breaking attendance of over 200 attendees, this year’s meeting was monumental!

FSSA welcomed to the stage our keynote speakers Tom Burgoyne, the Phillie Phanatic and Michael Allosso, Communications and Awareness Specialist, as well as all the other fantastic presenters. While the attendees weren’t participating in the educational sessions, FSSA hosted its 1st Annual Wiffle Ball World Series. Over 100 attendees came out to play some ball to support the FSSA Educational Foundation.

A huge thank you to our volunteers, who helped make this year’s Annual Forum a success. We can’t wait to see what 2018 holds in store for FSSA.

If you missed out on the Annual Forum this year, the presentations are posted here.

The Importance of School Bus Fire Suppression Systems

Brette Fraley had a curiosity about fire prevention. As executive director of transportation at Kanawha County Schools, West Virgninia’s largest school district, he researched thermal events on his bus fleet and surprisingly found at least four fires incidents in the past five years.

No one was injured, but Fraley was alarmed enough to campaign for more than $100,000 to install 40 fire suppression systems (ten now and thirty later) on the Charleston district’s Thomas Built Buses Saf-T-Liner C2s for special needs students. The district transports 252 special needs riders per day, 24 of them in wheelchairs.

“It makes sense to protect students and the investments that taxpayers have made for school buses. It’s like having insurance,” said Fraley.
