More about our Winners . . . $5,000 Scholarship in the name of Jim Boyer Jessica Gallo is a sophomore majoring in Fire Protection Engineering at the University of Maryland. For the past 18 months, Jessica has worked for Fire & Risk Alliance in Rockville, Maryland as a research intern focusing on electric vehicle and battery fires. She also was an engineering intern for Whiting-Turner during Summer 2023, where she had the opportunity to learn about fire systems, codes, and inspections while working in new construction. Additionally, as a rising senior in high school, Jessica was a research intern for the Department of Fire Protection Engineering at the University of Maryland where she focused on fires in informal settlements. Her research was published by the Society of Fire Protection Engineers in August 2021, and she continued her research with the Department throughout the 2021-2022 school year. She is also a member of the Society of Fire Protection Engineers Chapter at the University of Maryland. Jessica would like to express her profound appreciation to the Fire Suppression Systems Association for recognizing her with this scholarship in the name of Jim Boyer and for supporting her education. Scholarships like this make it possible for her to continue pursuing her educational and professional goals. She also would like to extend immense gratitude to Dr. Jim Milke and Dr. Noah Ryder for their mentorship, time, and dedication to supporting her education and her future in Fire Protection Engineering. Thank you very much!
$5,000 Scholarship in the name of Chuck Hooper Tyler Kleinsasser is a student at the SD School of Mines and Technology. Leonardo is a junior fire protection and safety engineering technology major at Eastern Kentucky University. He has also served as the treasurer for EKU’s Society of Fire Protection Engineers chapter for 3 semesters. From January 2022 to February 2023, he worked in EKU’s fire extinguisher lab as a fire extinguisher technician. In the position, he became skilled in inspection, testing, and maintenance for fire extinguishers across EKU’s campus. Over the summer of 2023, he interned at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. During his internship, he learned about Californium-252 processing and manufacturing and worked alongside fire protection engineers assisting with projects. His internship report focused on ORNL’s transition from the EST-3 to EST-4 fire alarm control panel, and establishing a supply of sprinkler piping for aging systems. Leonardo continues to succeed academically while remaining active on campus. Being a FSSA Foundation Scholarship recipient has allowed him to focus and succeed during his time in college. After college, he would be interested in systems design, risk analysis, and research.
