Mangrove forests typically occur at intertidal zones throughout coastal Florida. The mangrove forest biome plays a critical role in land stabilization and protection from storms and hurricanes. More importantly, it provides security and foraging and breeding habitat for countless aquatic and terrestrial species.
Guests begin the tour with paddling in the largest tract of mangrove forest in Southeastern Florida. The naturalist guide will explain interesting facts about the adaptations of these trees to saltwater conditions and about the species that inhabit a mangrove swamp, or mangal. You will also learn why these mangrove trees are known as one of the planets “ best carbon dioxide scrubbers.” As you paddle deeper into the forest, the surroundings transform into a new world of water and prop roots shadowed by a dark green canopy. Once inside, your guide will point out the creatures that make the mangrove ecosystem their home, including herons, crabs, gulls, and other seabirds.
Meet the group at the Marriott Convention Center entrance by 8:20 a.m.
